Culturally Centered Communications

Why "Deviant Compassion"?

Life and work are hard enough, and our systems and communication shouldn’t make them harder. We can all use a little more clarity and compassion. We know that vulnerability can feel scary. It’s human nature to grapple with shame and embarrassment, especially during times of change. Because we operate in a state of accepting these human truths, we noticed two things kept coming up in the work we do:

Sometimes, compassion requires deviance.

Deviant compassion holds the space for shameless change.

Our Guiding Values

We make sure helping doesn’t hurt

Our mission and objective remind us to hold ourselves accountable for our impact. We strive to be mindful of our intention.

Trauma-informed practice is an inside out process

Change must be demonstrated to our staff if we hope to create safety and long-term outcomes for our clients.

Cultural humility starts with empathy

and requires us to hold the experiences of those we don’t understand with the same regard as we hold our own.

Shared power makes everything work better

our collaborators and partners have wisdom we need and perspectives we value. Being challenged to change is a healthy part of collaboration.

Brave spaces and safe relationships aren’t negotiable

Trauma-informed care holds justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion at its center. You can’t have one without the other - and people need both to feel safe.

Perfectionism is part of white supremacy culture

Humans don’t need to be perfect, there are infinite ways to do things well. We offer ideas, tools, and our biggest value is in our ability to balance curiosity and creativity + candor and compassion.
